Board's Farewell to Departing Teachers Turns Emotional Patch Hillsborough, NJ --

Hillsborough's board of education took time Monday to pay tribute to teachers retiring at the end of this school year, with the emotional good-byes building to the recognition of outgoing Hillsborough Education Association President Barbara Parker.

A lengthy standing ovation greeted Parker as her HEA successor, Daynon Blevins, recounted her impact on the district and schools.

"Barbara Parker has the distinction of being the one person who has had the most influence on the Hillsborough public school system over the last decade," Blevins said, noting she worked in Hillsborough schools for 29 of her 40 years in education, and headed the HEA for the last 12 years. "This district has seen a lot of chances in the 29 years Barbara has been here, and the most signifiicant changes have occurred in her tenure as president.

"This district has seen a somewhat adversarial relationship between the board, administrators and the association, turned into one of collaboration and mutual respect—all under the guidance of Barbara," Blevins said. He added that while serving as the head of the education, Parker worked with four different superintendents and five different central office administrators, noting "While the district and the players have changed, the one constant has been Barbara.

"Hillsborough is a much better place because of Barbara Parker," he concluded.

Parker as one of 29 educators whose retirement was noted at the meeting. Following a short note of each teacher's service, plans for retirement, and a word of wisdom offered by each teacher (including a request for a "shameless plug for Donna Kitzie's Dog Walking Service" by Principal Steven Kerrigan), teachers present at the meeting were handed a gift by Board of Education President Thomas Kinst.

Hillsborough comments made by chief constable in email to be investigated

South Yorkshire police chief sent message to senior staff appearing to say families of those who died were not telling truth

Comments about the Hillsborough disaster made by a chief constable in an email will be investigated by another top police officer, a police and crime commissioner (PCC) has confirmed.

South Yorkshire PCC Shaun Wright said he has received a complaint regarding the content of emails sent by South Yorkshire chief David Crompton.

Crompton sent a message to his senior staff last year which appeared to suggest a campaign group representing families of those who died was not telling the full truth about the 1989 tragedy.

The email read: "One thing is certain – the Hillsborough Campaign for Justice will be doing their version … in fact their version of certain events has become 'the truth' even though it isn't!!

"I just have the feeling that the media 'machine' favours the families and not us, so we need to be a bit more innovative in our response to have a fighting chance otherwise we will just be roadkill."

Wright said the chief constable of Cambridgeshire, Simon Parr, will now investigate.

Crompton said he had thought the matter was "completely closed" after he apologised earlier this year.

The PCC said on Friday: "I have today recorded a complaint against the chief constable of South Yorkshire police, David Crompton, in relation to internal emails concerning the Hillsborough tragedy and its aftermath.

"The request has been submitted by a firm of solicitors in Liverpool acting on behalf of a number of individuals affected by the event. This is a formal complaint, which must be dealt with in accordance with statutory procedures.

"I have appointed an independent investigating officer, chief constable Simon Parr of Cambridgeshire Constabulary, to investigate the complaint."

But Crompton said: "In February this year I apologised for the wording of an email.

"The Independent Police Complaints Commission looked into the matter at the request of the crime commissioner and publicly concluded that no formal disciplinary proceedings were justified.

"Nothing has changed since then. No new material is available now which was not available in February.

"I had understood the matter to be completely closed but will co-operate fully with any investigation if requested to do so.

"At this stage it would be inappropriate to comment any further."

The internal email, which came to light following a Freedom of Information request, was sent as part of South Yorkshire police's preparations for the publication of the Hillsborough Independent Panel report last year.

It discussed how the force could use its website to respond to the findings of the panel.

When the report was published, it provoked widespread condemnation of the force's response to the disaster at Sheffield Wednesday's ground in April 1989, which left 96 Liverpool fans dead.

It revealed how dozens of police statements had been altered to portray police in a better light.

South Yorkshire police's response to the tragedy is currently subject to a huge inquiry by the IPCC.

In February, the IPCC commissioner, Nicholas Long, said the majority of the emails and documents he considered raised no issues.

But he said one email from the chief constable "caused me concern".

He said: "I consider that this is at best ill-judged, and at worst offensive and upsetting." Reported by guardian.co.uk 23 hours ago.

Rick Scott Will Have His Revenge On Wildflowers

$

Lord knows I should expect no end of perplexing behavior from Florida's fraud-tastic supervillain governor Rick Scott, but I am truly perplexed by one of his recent decisions. No, I'm not talking about his decision to sign a bill that blocks municipalities from enacting their own rules for mandatory paid sick days. In that case, Scott was simply caving in to the pressure from "Walt Disney World, Darden Restaurants, the Florida Chamber of Commerce and a broad array of powerful business interests who argued the ban was needed to avoid a patchwork of local employment rules for companies." That seems perfectly in keeping with what we are to expect from Scott.

I'm talking about his decision to veto a bill that would revise the fee that people voluntarily pay for the Florida Wildflower licence plate, the proceeds of which go to the Florida Wildflower Foundation, which in turn uses the money to, you know ... plant flowers.

How popular was this bill? So popular that not a single member of the Florida legislature, in either the House or Senate, cast a "nay" vote against it. You know how rare that is? This is the legislature that struggled, mightily, to ban bestiality. Any time you can get all these people to agree on something, that's a special occasion.

What they'd agreed to do, according to Michael Van Sickler of the Miami Herald, is increase "the annual $15 fee for the wildflower license plate by $10."

Lisa Roberts, the executive director of the Florida Wildflower Foundation told the Herald, "I'm stunned." And Van Sickler says that Scott's decision to veto the measure is "downright bizarre."

Just last month Scott approved a $25 specialty tag for Freemasonry. And on Wednesday, Scott approved a transportation bill that established license plates for three groups: the American Legion, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Lauren’s Kids, each one having a $25 fee for those who wanted to pay it.

Floridians like their wildflowers. Just a few days ago, Bill Varian of the Tampa Bay Times wrote a piece about Hillsborough County Commission board member Al Higginbotham's support for a plan that would bring more native Florida wildflowers to the side of the highways in Hillsborough:

If it works the way he hopes, the county would partner with private not-for-profits that encourage the planting of native wildflowers, some of which have been all but wiped out by sprawling development. Those groups, some including some that provide grant money, potentially would help train county employees in how and where to plant the flowers and keep them beautiful.

The proposal drew enthusiastic support from other commissioners when Higginbotham introduced it May 15 after a contentious debate about another issue.

"I'm a lover of wildflowers," gushed former Navy man Mark Sharpe. "I think this is kind of a cool item."

It is cool! And nice! It's flowers, for Pete's sake. And Varian went on to report that the state was already helping to allocate funding for these measures, through the Wildflower licence plate:

The Wildflower Foundation receives the proceeds from sales of an automobile license plates that features the image of a coreopsis. Sales have raised more than $3 million since the license plate was first offered in 2000.

It awards the money to local governments and other groups in a variety of grants used to train roadway managers or provide seeds for community or school wildflower gardens. By passing the resolution, Hillsborough commissioners open the door for the grant money and join 23 other counties in doing so.

The increase to the license plate fee -- which I'll remind you is something that people freely choose to pay, if they so desire -- was something the Florida Wildlife Foundation hoped might bring back some revenue, which had dipped of late. Again, people had to be willing to pay for it in order for this plan to be successful, so this was something of a gamble.

But the Florida legislature -- which again, passed the measure unanimously -- agreed that it was worth a try. Maybe Scott was somehow unaware that everyone who was helping to fund the Wildflower Foundation was doing so voluntarily. Oh, look, here's Scott's letter about the veto, which he sent to Florida's Secretary Of State, Kenneth Detzner. Maybe this will clear things up:

Dear Secretary Detzner:

By the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Florida, and Article III, Section 8, of the Constitution of Florida, I do hereby veto and transmit my objections to House Bill 265, enacted during the 115th Session of the Legislature of Florida, during the Regular Session of 2013, and entitled:

"An act relating to the Florida wildflower license plate…"

The bill increases the annual use fee for a specialty license plate; an expense in addition to the standard fees paid when registering a motor vehicle. Although buying a specialty license plate is voluntary, Floridians wishing to demonstrate their support for our State’s natural beauty would be subjected to the cost increases sought by this bill.

For this reason, I withhold my approval of House Bill 265 and do hereby veto the same.

But ... huh? Floridians wishing to demonstrate their support for Florida's natural beauty are making the affirmative choice to be subjected to these costs. Those who do not wish to pay the costs on behalf of Florida's wildflowers do not have to; they may simply obtain any other licence plate.

Well, the same Florida legislature that supported this bill unanimously can just override Scott's veto with a two-thirds vote. That would resolve the matter, though it won't explain this "downright bizarre" veto.

My colleague Gabrielle wonders, "Maybe Scott just has severe allergies?" Or maybe he secretly wants to funnel more people away from the expensive plates he approved into wildflowers without tipping his hand. Or maybe Rick Scott is in thrall to a powerful species of non-native bodysnatcher flowers from outer space, and their lobbyists. Who knows?

Warren Veteran Takes Flight on Historic World War II Plane

Warren Veteran Takes Flight on Historic World War II Plane Patch Hillsborough, NJ --

When Jack Elliott Schapiro was 20 years old he left New Jersey by ship and headed to Africa. From there he went to Italy, then France and the Rhineland. His travels were all courtesy of Uncle Sam in 1944 and 1945—he was a private with the 83^rd Chemical Mortar Battalion.

Nearly 70 years later he took another trip, but this time it was closer to home courtesy of the Yankee Air Force. On Friday afternoon, Schapiro flew up and down the Hudson River in Yankee Lady, one of the last flying B-17 bombers in the world.

It is all part of the Wings & Wheels Expo 2013 at Teterboro Airport this weekend.

“It’s a show in three parts. You’ve got the air display, which involves a number of warbirds this year,” Shea Oakley, executive director of the Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum of New Jersey, said. “Then you have the car part of the show, which is classic cars – we’re also bring in two of the Batmobiles and the Green Hornet car. And then there’s the Salute to Veterans part of the show.”

There will be a hero’s row—a line of tables full of the men and women who served this country. There will be Pearl Harbor veterans and three Tuskegee Airmen—part of the first squadron of African-American pilots and crews in World War II. Their accomplishments were featured in George Lucas’s movie Red Tails last year.

Bee Haydu, a Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) and inductee to the New Jersey Aviation Hall of Fame, will be sharing the story of the women who flew during WWII. There will be veterans who were shot down over Europe and held as POWs, and Jean Cruz, the soldier who pulled Saddam Hussein out of the spider hole during the Iraq War will be on hand to talk about his experience.

Among the planes on static display will be a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, made famous by the Flying Tigers; a Japanese Val dive-bomber; a C-47; and a C-54 that flew supplies into Germany during the Berlin Airlift. There also will be some jets—an L-29 trainer and two corporate jets, a Falcon 900 and a Citation X.

But the star of the show is Yankee Lady, which will be offering rides like the one Schapiro took on Friday.

“Oh boy, it was great,” the longtime Warren Township resident said. “I’ve flown in a B-17 four or five times, but every time is better than the last. This airplane is the finest looking one I’ve ever seen.”

And he should know. Schapiro, writing under the name Jack Elliott, wrote “Wings Over Jersey,” a column about aviation that ran in the Newark Star-Ledger every week for 38 and a half years. He also is a member of the New Jersey Aviation Hall of Fame, along with Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart and Buzz Aldrin.

The 30-minute flight went down the Hudson River, past the Statue of Liberty and the Verrazano Bridge before turning back up past the aircraft carrier Intrepid and the George Washington Bridge. But the highlight of the flight was passing the new Freedom Tower being constructed at Ground Zero.

Nothing could be more appropriate to start the salute to veterans at this year’s Wings & Wheels Expo than flying an aircraft that helped provide the freedoms we enjoy today past a building that serves as a reminder that the fight never ends.

To book a ride in the Yankee Lady this weekend, call 734-843-4030 or go to the Yankee Air Museum website.

The Wings & Wheels Expo runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $15 for adults of $8 for seniors or children under 12. Kids under 3 are free, as are veterans with proof of service or active duty military personnel (with ID). All the proceeds benefit the Aviation Hall of Fame & Museum of NJ located at 400 Fred Wehran Dr., Teterboro Airport.

With the increase of DUIs and serious traffic offenses inquires, Skubiak & Rivas P.A. is pleased to announce the hiring of DUI Traffic Lawyer Albert Pucylowski.

Orlando, FL (PRWEB) June 15, 2013

Skubiak & Rivas P.A. announces the addition of Albert Pucylowski, a high-profile Orlando attorney specializing in the defense of individuals charged with driving under the influence (DUI) and serious traffic offenses, to the Central Florida team.

“The rate of DUIs and serious traffic offenses has risen dramatically in our region,” said Robert P. Skubiak, founder and senior partner of Skubiak & Rivas P.A., Traffic Law Firm. “We feel the increasing need for legal defense every day in our firm. In fact this year, searches and user engagement pertaining to DUI defense services increased on TrafficLawFirm.com. To keep pace with our client’s needs, we were pleased to add Albert to our team.”

DUI charges are serious and they come with severe penalties. For first-time offenders, the penalties can include 6 to 9 months of jail time; fines ranging from $500 to $2,000; license suspension from 180 days to 1 year; community service requirements; and more.

“The cost for DUIs and other serious traffic offenses only begins with the monetary fines, which could ultimately be $10,000 or more,” he said. “The impact on future employment opportunities, social stigmas and personal repercussions present obstacles that cannot be calculated in a courtroom. So it’s critical to do everything within the limits of the law to reduce the charges and resulting sentence because there is much at stake.”

According to the State of Florida DMV, there were 55,722 DUI tickets issued in 2011 and 33,625 convictions in Florida in 2011.

Albert Pucylowski joins Skubiak & Rivas P.A. with 11 years of DUI and traffic ticket experience. YMCAs Offer Kids Free Breakfast and Lunch This Summer Patch Brandon, FL --

No child should feel the hunger pains caused by a missed meal.

That's the philosophy of the Tampa Metropolitan YMCA and the Walmart Foundation, which are teaming up to ensure that kids have the healthy food they need during the summer months.

With the help of a $50,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation, the Tampa Metropolitan YMCA is offering a free breakfast or lunch to all kids age 18 and under through Aug. 16.

In addition to getting a free meal, kids are invited to enjoy free activities at their local Y.

“In order for kids to maintain good health, they need proper nourishment as well as activities to keep their minds and bodies active,” said Candace Culver, executive director of YMCA Childcare Services. “The YMCA’s Summer Food Program will help kids stay well-nourished, active and energized, and also provide some relief to families who need support in providing more food when school is out.”

The Tampa YMCA’s Summer Food Program is part of a national partnership between YMCA of the USA and the Walmart Foundation to address child hunger in communities.

While more than 30 million children in low-income communities receive free or reduced-cost meals during the school year, only 2.3 million of these same kids have access to free meals when school is out. At more than 900 summer food program sites nationwide, the Y will strive to serve four million healthy meals and snacks to 100,000 kids this summer.

The Summer Food Program will be available at the following YMCAs: * *

Big Green Bus to Visit Duke Farm Sunday Patch Hillsborough, NJ --

Duke Farms will host a Father’s Day event in collaboration with the Big Green Bus and American By-Products Recyclers from 12–3 p.m. Sunday.

“We are incredibly excited to host the Big Green Bus, because its mission is perfectly aligned with that of Duke Farms,” said Nora Wagner, director of programs at Duke Farms. “We hope this event ignites a conversation about sustainable living, and we are challenging our guests to consider how they could take measures to protect and preserve the environment.”

During the event at Duke Farms, attendees will examine the refurbished Big Green Bus and watch as it is refueled with biodiesel donated by American By-Products Recyclers in order to continue on its 12,000 mile journey across 18 states.

"We're proud to support the students of the Big Green Bus and their exciting mission—last year we supplied them with recycled waste cooking oil as fuel; this year it's biodiesel," said Todd Magee, co-owner of American By-Products Recyclers. The Big Green Bus team of 12 Dartmouth College students will present individual accounts about their journeys and engage in a dialogue with audience members, with the conversation revolving around the theme of sustainability. Children will have the opportunity to contribute to a mural exhibit that answers the question, “What does the world YOU want look like?” Duke Farms will also provide environmental learning activity stations, scavenger hunts and solar-powered car building and races for children.

“This is truly a family event, which is why we are hosting the Big Green Bus on Father’s Day,” said Michael Catania, executive director of Duke Farms. “The entire family can interact with this truly unique bus while learning about sustainability in engaging and fun ways.”

Duke Farms covers an area of more than 2,740 acres and has attracted an average of 10,000 visitors each weekend since it opened to the public last year. It will serve as a destination for the Big Green Bus, which will travel to select locations across the country from mid-June to late-August. Reported by Patch 18 hours ago.

16 Questions Asked by Bloomingdale Big-Box Opponents

16 Questions Asked by Bloomingdale Big-Box Opponents Patch Brandon, FL --

Residents opposed to big-box retail and apartment complex development just west of Lithia-Pinecrest Road and Bloomingdale Avenue, have sent certified letters to each of the seven Hillsborough County commissioners concerning the Redstone Properties development project.

· *See Big-Box Opponents Demand Written Answers From All 7 Hillsborough County Commissioners*

Enclosed with the certified letters is a copy of the nine-page document residents read from at the June 10 meeting with Commissioner Al Higginbotham, including background material, text from pertinent BOCC meetings and the 16 questions residents want answered.

Residents packed the Brandon Community Center multipurpose room after organizers with the Coordinated Active Neighborhoods Development Organization (CAN-DO) distributed some 2,500 flyers about the meeting the weekend before.

Here are the 16 questions asked, to which CAN-DO representatives request written answers by the commissioner and county staff:

1. If this developer were before the county commission today asking to amend the Land Development Code as they did back in 2011, knowing what you know now, would you still approve it?

2. Don't you, as our elected representative, have a responsibility to make sure we are not "duped"? And if we were duped. as the commissioner says we were, shouldn't you go after the developer for misrepresenting what they intended to develop, even if it means taking legal action?

3. In the May 15, 2013 BOCC meeting, commissioners repeatedly said that "it wasn't this board that made the changes," but in reality it was — each and every one of you voted to change TND to MUD zoning. How do you and the other commissioners plan on fixing this mess YOU made in 2011?

4. When this privately initiated text amendment from the developer came before the BOCC in September 2011 and December 2011, why did you NOT protect the property rights, way of life, safety and community structure for the residents living in Bloomingdale?]

5. Even if it's not required by law, why didn't you, Commissioner Higginbotham, follow up to make sure that they did what they promised to do, which was to hold community meetings? Don't you owe that to us, your constituents?

6. Don't you think that the public has a right to have a say in rezoning matters, especially when they will impact their community?

7. In the 2003 rezoning hearing a condition that the land use hearing officer placed on the approval was dealing with traffic and failing roads. What is your justification now for approving the failure of this stretch of Bloomingdale Avenue?

8. You personally know how important EMS response time is. Do you not also care about the safety of your constituents? How much will this increase response times when EMS can't get down the road? How many people will have to die or lose their house to a fire before you care?

9. As our county commissioner, where do you plan on obtaining the $600,000 plus right-of-way costs to do the minimal modifications to these intersections? Keeping in mind that this money has nothing to do with improving what will be a failing Bloomingdale Avenue and that it will be many years until Lithia Pinecrest [Road] will be improved.

10. How do you think adding almost 8,000 more cars every day to this section of road will affect the safety of pedestrians and motorists, in an area that is already one of the most dangerous in the county? Keep in mind that within approximately 0.5 mile[s] of the development site in question, on Bloomingdale Avenue, there is a county library, a high school, a YMCA and a county recreation area with baseball fields.

11. Do you think the BOCC should be liable for making this conscious decision, which seems in direct conflict with the safety of the citizens of Hillsborough County and your constituents?

12. How do you plan to address overcrowding of schools and the safety of our children?

13. Who is going to refund the residents for their losses? Who is going to protect our small businesses?

14. This development isn't economic growth as sold to you by the consultants in the September 2011 BOCC meeting, it is a corporate subsidy. Can Hillsborough County taxpayers afford another Walmart supercenter?

15. What do you plan to do to protect the property, quality of life, peace and quiet of the adjacent residents?

16. How do you plan to save the existing oak trees on the property and what will you do to ensure that Little Oaks neighborhood residences will not flood due to this project?
