Half A Ton Of Drugs Collected Patch Carrollwood-Northdale, FL --

A special operation to get unused prescription drugs off the street resulted in more than 1,000 pounds of collected drugs, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

That's double the amount of drugs collected at last year's Drug Take Back event.

The national effort was conducted locally by Hillsborough Sheriff deputies and volunteers on April 27 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at two Sweetbay Supermarkets in Hillsborough County.

In Northdale, law enforcement along with volunteers collected drugs at Sweetbay Supermarket, 15692 N. Dale Mabry Highway.

The two locations collected 74 boxes of unwanted prescription drugs approximately 1,320 pounds, according to a sheriff's office media release.

The Hillsborough County Anti-Drug Alliance supported this take back
initiative. The unused and expired prescription medications collected prevents
potentially dangerous drugs from getting into the wrong hands, the release states.

WHS' 'Bat Boy' Receives Multiple Rising Star Nominations Patch Westfield, NJ --

The following is a press release from the Paper Mill Playhouse:

Since their inception in 1996 the *Paper Mill Playhouse* (Mark S. Hoebee-Artistic Director, Todd Schmidt-Managing Director) Rising Star Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theatre have ignited the careers of many notable performers, all of whom attended high school in New Jersey.  Among the early nominees and winners are Academy Award® winner Anne Hathaway, Tony® Award winners Laura Benanti and Nikki M. James, and current 2013 Tony® nominee, Rob McClure.  The 2013 Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards Ceremony presented by the Investors Foundation will take place at Paper Mill Playhouse Tuesday, June 4th at 7:30pm.

“There is great energy and level of excitement in high school musical theater right now,” commented Mark S. Hoebee, Paper Mill Playhouse’s Producing Artistic Director. “Due to television programs like Fox’s Glee and NBC’s Smash, there is a new, invigorated interest and enthusiasm surrounding these projects. The culmination for many New Jersey high schools is the prestigious honor of a Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star nomination and we are proud to present these awards to New Jersey schools. Additionally, many of Paper Mill Playhouse's Rising Star nominees and winners are now working professionally and have also been nominees or winners of several prestigious industry awards while on Broadway or making films.”

The Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards presented by the Investors Foundation are modeled after the Tony® Awards and Paper Mill Playhouse's program serves the entire state of New Jersey with nearly 100 entered productions from public, private and parochial high schools. Paper Mill Playhouse conceived and created the awards in 1996 to give schools the opportunity to showcase their musical arts programs on a state level. The musicals are adjudicated by Paper Mill Playhouse throughout the spring by a group of 70 Evaluators, with each school receiving four independent evaluations. The 2013 Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards ceremony is set for Tuesday, June 4^th at the Millburn theater.  Schools nominated for ‘Outstanding Overall Musical’ and ‘Leading Actor/Actress’ nominees perform at the event and award recipients are presented with an engraved crystal award from  Tiffany & Co.

"I am joined by my colleagues on the board of the Investors Foundation in applauding the outstanding work of the Paper Mill Playhouse," said Investors Bank President and CEO Kevin Cummings.  "We are proud to continue our support of the Rising Star Awards program, now in its 18th year, and to help the playhouse recognize the performing arts talents of New Jersey's students and educators."

Paper Mill Director of Education Lisa Cooney, "What's happening in high school musical productions here in New Jersey and around the country is remarkable. Programs like the Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards raise the bar and create opportunities for student performers and theatre technicians to be recognized for their achievements, while giving them access to thousands of dollars in scholarship money.  We consistently hear from top tier colleges and casting directors that the Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Award is a significant accolade for an aspiring theatre artist.”

Paper Mill Playhouse also awards $5,000 in scholarships at the Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards presented by the Investors Foundation.  Four $1,000 cash scholarships are given to outstanding individual students who plan to continue studying theatre in college, and a technical theatre scholarship of $1,000 is sponsored annually by Scaramouche Costumes, LLC.  Paper Mill Playhouse is pleased to announce that a prize of $500 will be given to a school receiving the 2013 Educational Impact Award which acknowledges a school that successfully connects the musical to the district's curriculum, using the production as a teaching tool for the greater student body and local community. Through the Rising Star “Theatre for Everyone” Inclusion & Access Award and a partnership with VSA New Jersey and The Cultural Access Network of New Jersey, a project of the New Jersey Theatre Alliance and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, Paper Mill Playhouse will present a cash award of $1,000 to a school to recognize excellence in the promotion and practice of creative inclusion of students and adults with disabilities as performers, designers, musicians and production staff. Additionally, this award also seeks to recognize and reward a school that takes steps to ensure their performances are accessible to audiences with disabilities.

Lastly, students receiving final nominations in the lead and supporting acting categories receive a scholarship to Paper Mill Playhouse's competitive Summer Musical Theatre Conservatory, a professional training program, which along with advanced classes in singing, acting and dance, offers the nominees an opportunity to perform on the stage at Paper Mill Playhouse in our season finale concert, "New Voices of 2013: Swing Awakening: a celebration of standards and jazz hits that are the soul and heart of musical theatre” on August 2^nd and 3^rd.

Among the top nominated high schools, Summit High School leads with 15 nominations, followed by Union High School with 14, Bergen County Academies with 11, Fair Lawn High School with 8 and Gill St. Bernard’s School and Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School with 7 nominations each.

The 2013 Rising Star Awards presented by the Investors Foundation are also generously supported by The Bloomingdale’s Fund of the Macy’s Foundation.

Rising Star scholarships are made possible by John Burgio & Ruth Bedford in Memory of Jane Burgio, Scaramouche Costumes LLC, Douglas Michael Krueger Scholarship Fund Trust, VSA New Jersey, and the Cultural Access Network of New Jersey.

Additional major funding for Paper Mill Playhouse Education Outreach is provided by The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and MetLife Foundation.

Paper Mill Playhouse programs are made possible, in part, by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, A Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Paper Mill Playhouse, a not-for-profit arts organization, is one of the country's leading regional theatres. Paper Mill Playhouse is a member of Theatre Communications Group, the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, the Council of Stock Theatres, and the New Jersey Theatre Alliance.

Odessa Home Invasions Connected to Man Charged in Triple Shooting

Patch Westchase, FL --

Jason Mark Burnett turned 37 on Saturday, May 4.

He is accused of spending the very next day breaking into three homes, killing two people and injuring a third.

That’s according to Pasco and Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies who say Burnett began a home invasion spree in Odessa in the early morning hours of May 5 that ended with three shootings and one death in Citrus Park.

The first incident began around 9:45 a.m. May 5 when Pasco deputies say Burnett went to a home at 14339 Tifton Lane in Odessa and entered through an unlocked door. He walked into the home’s bedroom and demanded money from a woman. He left with the woman’s cell phone.

At 10 a.m., deputies say Burnett paid a visit to a home at 1518 Rowland Drive. This time he forced his way inside and demanded money and guns from the victim, Pasco County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Doug Tobin wrote in an email to media.

“Burnett was carrying a revolver and struck the victim on the head with the gun causing a laceration above his left eye,” Tobin wrote.

Burnett was traveling with a woman and the pair left the scene in a 2000 Ford F150 pickup truck. Burnett did get cash during the second robbery, Tobin said.

Burnett’s spree continued from there into Hillsborough County where deputies say he shot three women in a Citrus Park home around 11:15 a.m. May 5. Two of the women – Nel Mason, 52, and Fern Giddings, 56, died as a result. Mason’s daughter, Christina Soto, 35, was also shot and remains in St. Joseph’s Hospital today, May 6.

Burnett was arrested by Hillsborough deputies on a host of charges, including two counts of first-degree murder. Charges in Pasco are pending, Tobin said.

Deputies in both counties say the robberies appear to be drug-related.

Burnett had a male accomplice in the Citrus Park robbery. You can read more details about the Citrus Park shooting in this article published on Westchase Patch.

Former and Current Students Saddened by Middle School Teacher's Death Patch Hillsborough, NJ --

Hillsborough Middle School teacher Barbara Doyle, 54, died Thursday, and the school has posted a tribute to the longtime seventh-grade literacy teacher on its website.

But Ashley DelVecchio, a former student of Doyle's, was moved to post a tribute also to the teacher she said inspired her. In addition to her classroom duties, Doyle directed the school's plays, and it was there that Ashley formed a bond with the teacher as she was cast as Glinda in the school's production of "The Wizard of Oz."

The school's tribute notes Doyle "took leave from teaching last spring when diagnosed with cancer and bravely fought the illness before succumbing peacefully at home with her family.

"Ms. Doyle was known for her indomitable spirit and love for children, particularly when it came to championing the cause of the underdog, and her passion for the arts that was a creative force behind our drama and musical theater productions for many years," the Hillsborough Middle School tribute continues.

"As a resident of Hillsborough, Ms. Doyle was a friend and neighbor to many throughout our community and a vital influence in the lives of students who knew her as a teacher, mentor, and artistic inspiration and coach.

Her friends and family have planned a memorial celebration for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Somerset Valley Playhouse.

Dpyle is survived by three children, Rebecca L. Doyle of Somerset, Edward J. Doyle, of Provo, Utah, and Catherine M. Doyle of Royersford, Pa; two sisters, Carol Lentz, of Dover, and Michelle Sokolski of Walnut Creek, Calif.; her mother and stepfather, Judy and Ray Sedivec of Rockaway.

The family has asked for contributions to the American Cancer Society , P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK, 723123-1718 or the Embrace Kids Foundation, 121 Somerset Street, New Brunswick, NJ, 08901, in lieu of flowers.

Is Hillsborough a 'Walkable' Town? Patch Hillsborough, NJ --

WalkScore.com, a website that helps its users identify some of the most walker-friendly communities in the country, gives Hillsborough a "car dependent" score, noting "few amenities are within walking distance" for many residents.

The score is actually just short of the 50 points needed for a "somewhat walkable" score—and may be a bit on the generous side.

The site is designed to give people looking for apartments or condominiums an idea of how accessible stores, restaurants and other amenities are by foot. And while most of the township's businesses are not far in distance from such developments, that's not to say it's an easy walk.

So while we would agree it's not a really walkable town, we do have to disagree that there isn't a lot of walking going on—most neighborhoods are crawling with walkers out getting their exercise or taking their pets for an extended walk.

So maybe you can't walk to the grocery store, you can walk to the top of Sourland Mountain—try that in Hoboken! Reported by Patch 10 hours ago.

Preliminary Cause Announced for Hillsborough Fire

Preliminary Cause Announced for Hillsborough Fire Patch Burlingame, CA --

Underbrush or other decomposing materials may have been the cause of a three-alarm fire that damaged parts of seven homes in Hillsborough on Friday, a fire official said. Previously, it was reported that just five homes were damaged.

Central County firefighters received a report of a structure fire in the 1800 block of Black Mountain Road at about 4:53 p.m., according to sheriff's deputies. Two homes were fully involved in the fire and the wind pushed the fire to five nearby homes, including ones on Darrell Road, according to Central County Fire public information officer Rocque Yballa.

The woodshake roof on the first home fueled the fire, Yballa said. The two homes sustained significant damage, including damage to its shed areas.

The home closest to the origin sustained extensive damage, according to Yballa. Another home on an adjacent side saw a fiberglass boat destroyed, Yballa said.

The fire started on the fence line of two properties and a potential cause of the fire is underbrush or other decomposing materials that were piled near the fence, Yballa said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by police and fire officials.

All residents of the homes were accounted for and no injuries were sustained as a result of the fire, deputies said.

The fire was brought under control and extinguished within two hours of the initial report, sheriff's deputies said.

Cal Fire, San Bruno Fire, Millbrae Fire, Central County Fire, and San Mateo City Fire all helped work the scene, Yballa said.

Yballa wants to remind people to make sure to always place piles away from fences, make sure shake roofs are treated, and to clean out leaves from gutters.

Sunnymead School Community Mourns Death of Second-Grade Teacher Patch Hillsborough, NJ --

For a second time this week, a Hillsborough school community is mourning the death of a teacher, after Sunnymead School second grade teacher Rosemary Skavron died from complications from an illness Saturday.

Skavron had been working in the school until she took a leave just a few weeks ago.

She is survived by her husband, and daughter, Faith (additional family members may be added upon publication of the complete obituary). Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at Mary, Mother of God Church, with visitation scheduled for 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hillsborough Funeral Home.

The school has taken extraordinary steps to help the young students cope with the news. Parents reported receiving calls from Sunnymead Principal Tammy Jenkins over the weekend to share the news, as well as provide guidance on discussing the matter with their children.

"Talking to children about death must be geared to their developmental level," Dr. Jenkins said in an email sent to parents. "Children will be aware of the reactions of significant adults as they interpret and react to information about death and tragedy.

"In fact, for primary grade children adult reactions will play an especially important role in shaping their perceptions of the situation," she continued.

School counselors were prepared to provide grief counseling to any students Monday and through the week, and the school provided suggestions on helping students through their mourning (attached).  Reported by Patch 2 days ago.
