John Stanczak, Founding Member of Fire Company, Dead at 86 Patch Hillsborough, NJ --

Former Hillsborough Fire Chief John Stanczak, 86, died on Tuesday — 30 days after local fire fighters and officials celebrated his decades of service to Hillsborough.

Stanczak was a founding member of Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Co. no. 2, on Route 206, serving as chief in 1962 and 1963. His decades of volunteer service was recognized April 7, during a special luncheon in Montgomery.

"Chief Stanczak was always a fixture at our membership meetings and company events, always showing up with a smile, sitting in the back and enjoying the company and comradrie of the brotherhood," the fire company posted on its website announcing his death. "Chief always lent a helping hand with certain projects especially when it came to woodwork which was his profession and his passion.

"The younger members always enjoyed talking to the Chief and picking his brain of fire tactics and listening to the stories he would tell about the early days of Hillsborough and our company," the post added.

After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Stanczak became a union carpenter, and enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

He was born in Somerville and was a lifelong resident of Hillsborough.

Juggling Duties to Help Israeli Youth Circus Patch Hillsborough, NJ --

It's easy to view the complex history of the Middle East in stark terms, but that sometimes misses the connections people living together often forge. For example, a program in Galilee brings together Israeli and Arab children in a project that teaches trust and communication—by performing circus acts.

The Galilee Circus features young performers between 6 and 18 years of age, and often travels the world to showcase its young stars. It's a project Hillsborough's Mitchell Friedman appreciates—and is working to help.

Mitchell has dedicated his upcoming bar mitzvah to the Galilee Circus, and is emulating the Israeli group by hosting a circus show from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. May 19 at Hillsborough's Circus Place, donating the proceeds from ticket sales and donations to the Galilee Circus.

"Mitchell is doing everything for this show himself; from organizing the acts, to writing the script, to performing," his mother, Lisa Friedman, said. "He has advertised, sold tickets and collected donations so that he can maximize what he can give to the Galilee Circus."

Tickets are $10 and available by emailing Lisa Friedman or from Temple Beth-El Reported by Patch 3 hours ago.

Body Recovered from Hudson River Patch Fort Lee, NJ --

The body of an as-yet unidentified female was recovered from the Hudson River, the Newark Star-Ledger reported Wednesday.

The body was discovered among some rocks near 158th Street at about 1:30 p.m., according to a Port Authority spokesman. No determination of the age of the female or how long the body may have been in the water has been made, according to the report.

The area was part of the river searched last month, after Hillsborough student Paige Aiello went missing on April 9 and her purse was found on the George Washington Bridge. She had apparently taken a family car to New Brunswick, and then gone into New York's Penn Station by train.

Her family has offered a reward for any information regarding her whereabouts, and on several occasions, friends organized searches and handed out fliers in hopes of finding out more about her whereabouts.

Anyone with information about Aiello’s whereabouts should contact the Hillsborough Township Police Department at 908-369-4323, the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office at 908-575-3300, the Somerset County Crime Stoppers’ Tip Line at 1-888-577-TIPS(8477) or online at www.888577tips.org or www.scpo.net and click on either “Crime Stoppers” or “TIPS HOTLINE”. Cops Coming to Westchase Schools? Patch Westchase, FL --

The question of whether or not to post deputies on Hillsborough County elementary school campuses has been a hot-button issue ever since the Dec. 14, 2012, Newtown, Conn., massacre rocked the nation.

While Hillsborough has never witnessed an attack that compares to Newtown’s slaying of 20 children and six adults, fears have run high that it could happen here. Bullets found on Hillsborough buses in the wake of the attack and other subsequent lockdown situations, including Brandon’s recent pepper spray incident, have given rise to a desire to see security increased.

Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee thinks he has a solution that could bolster the security measures already put into place by the school board. In addition to the $1 million the board has agreed to spend to improve campus safety, Gee wants to apply for a U.S. Department of Justice Community Oriented Policing Services grant to help fund 24 new deputy positions meant to serve schools, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Gee’s proposal was floated by the school board May 7 and met with tentative approval. It is unclear at this time how much money the grant would bring in to pay for the deputies or how the county would pay for the posts once a three-year grant cycle ran out. It’s also unclear at this point if Hillsborough would even win the funding – the application deadline is later this month.

Shortly after the Newtown shootings, Patch readers sounded off about posting deputies in schools.

“We should have a police officer at every school and during school hours for every school dispatch should see to it that than another officer is always within 1 mile of every school,” commented Patch reader Ed Harris.

Jay Smiley didn’t necessarily agree.

“We need metal detecting doors at each entrance of all schools. if we prevent weapons from getting in the schools we can effectively solve this problem,” he said.

Pleasanton Man Pleads No Contest to Burlingame iPhone and iPad Thefts Patch Burlingame, CA --

*By Bay City News*

A Pleasanton man charged with stealing iPhones and iPads from a number of San Mateo County businesses pleaded no contest Thursday to four felony counts of commercial burglary, prosecutors said.

Nicholas Anthony Simat, 26, entered the plea Thursday as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors in return for the dismissal of the remaining nine counts.

However, the remaining counts will still be considered in sentencing, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

Simat was identified as a suspect in a string of burglaries dating back to late February in South San Francisco, *Burlingame* and Daly City after police released surveillance photos  and a suspect description, according to South San Francisco police.

In the thefts, a white male suspect entered numerous businesses and engaged employees in long conversations. The suspect introduced himself as "Mike" or "Michael" and told employees at the businesses that he was a "computer guy" who had just inherited a sum of money, police said. When the employees were distracted or called away, the suspect stole their phones and tablet computers, police said.

Simat was located at a friend's house in Pinole and arrested after he allegedly admitted to detectives that he was responsible for the thefts, according to police.

He allegedly said he was addicted to heroin and OxyContin and stole the phones to fund his drug habit.

Simat's sentencing is scheduled for May 31 at 9 a.m. He remains in custody in lieu of $100,000 bail.

7 Jobs that Make the World a Better Place Patch Hillsborough, NJ --

*The following story was provided by AOLJobs.com *

*By Debra Auerbach for CareerBuilder*

Have you ever had an itch to quit your job and instead do work that makes a real difference in the world? In honor of Earth Day on April 22, we've compiled a list of seven jobs that help people live a better life – from the buildings they work and live in, to the energy that fuels their homes, to the air they breathe.

*1. Conservation scientist: *Conservation scientists are hired to help preserve and protect natural habitats. They usually work with landowners and federal, state and local governments to find the best ways to use and improve the land while conserving the environment.*

· *How to become one*: Conservation scientists typically need a bachelor's degree in forestry or a related field. It helps job prospects to have a degree from programs that are accredited by the Society of American Foresters and other similar organizations.
· *Pay*: According to Economic Modeling Specialists International, conservation scientists earn a median hourly income of $28.28.

If you’re looking for a green job in Hillsborough, *check out our jobs page.*

*2. Energy auditor: *When a building is cooled or heated, it uses energy. Buildings often leak energy, so they produce extra heat or air to compensate, which wastes more energy. Energy auditors help curb energy waste by inspecting buildings to find areas of air leakage and advising customers on how to fix and prevent leaks.

· *How to become one*: There are no nationwide education or training requirements for energy auditors, but some states require auditors to take courses or earn a certification. Certification is available through organizations such as the Building Performance Institute, the Residential Energy Services Network and the Association of Energy Engineers. Some local technical and community colleges also offer energy auditing courses.
· *Pay*: Since it's such a new field, national wage information is currently unavailable.

If you’re looking for a green job in Hillsborough, *check out our jobs page.*

*More:* How To Find A Job That Is A Good 'Fit'

*3. Green construction manager:* Construction is another area that has seen an emergence of green jobs. As interest for environmental protection increases, the demand for green buildings grows with it. Construction managers that specialize in green buildings plan, direct, coordinate and budget construction projects, ensuring that onsite processes are environmentally friendly. This could mean setting up a recycling plan for unused construction materials or protecting environmentally sensitive areas of the site. They're also responsible for choosing contractors who have knowledge of green building techniques.

· *How to become one:* Most construction managers come to the job with experience working on other similar projects. Most also hold a bachelor's degree or higher in construction management, business management or engineering. They may also acquire a LEED Green Associate credential or have taken the NCCER's Sustainable Construction Supervisor Training and Certification Program.
· *Pay: *Median annual pay for construction managers is $85,030.

If you’re looking for a green job in Hillsborough, *check out our jobs page.*

*4. Landscape architect:* According to the American Society of Landscape Architects, these workers analyze, plan, design, manage and nurture natural and built environments. Projects they may work on include: academic campuses, conservation, corporate and commercial areas, gardens and arboreta, green infrastructure, interior landscapes and land planning. Landscape architects who work on green building sites apply their expertise to plan attractive scenery while also conserving water, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. They may also plan drainage channels to diffuse rainwater throughout planting beds.

· *How to become one*: Landscape architects are required to have licenses. Requirements vary among states but usually include a degree in landscape architecture from an accredited school, work experience and a passing score on the Landscape Architect Registration Exam.
· *Pay: *According to the ASLA, average annual salary and bonuses for landscape architects is $78,600.

If you’re looking for a green job in Hillsborough, *check out our jobs page.*

*5. Recycling truck driver:* There are many roles that help ensure that the U.S. recycling system works and is successful. One such job is that of the drivers, also known as recyclable material collectors. These workers are employed by recycling companies or local governments to pick up recyclables from residences and offices and transport them to a materials recovery facility. Several drivers usually work together as a team to collect recyclables.

· *How to become one:* Drivers should have at least a high school education or a G.E.D. To be certified to handle these trucks, drivers must have a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with airbrake endorsement. Drivers need to pass drug screening and background checks and should have clean driving records.
· *Pay: *The median annual pay for refuse and recyclable material collectors is $29,610.

If you’re looking for a green job in Hillsborough, *check out our jobs page.*

*6. Solar power plant operator:* According to the U.S. Department of Energy, every hour, enough energy from the sun reaches Earth to meet the world's energy usage for an entire year. Creating solar power by converting sunlight into electricity lowers emissions from electricity generation and helps decrease long-term energy costs. Because of these benefits, solar power has continued to grow as an industry. Solar power plants are run by operators, who oversee power generation and distribution from control rooms. They monitor the solar arrays and generators and regulate output from the generators, and they monitor instruments to maintain voltage to regulate electricity flows from the plant.

· *How to become one*: Strong mechanical, technical and computer skills are needed to operate a power plant. Certification by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation is necessary for positions that could affect the power grid.
· *Pay*: The median annual pay for power plant operators is $64,270.

If you’re looking for a green job in Hillsborough, *check out our jobs page.*

*7. Wind turbine service technician: *Wind power is a relatively new source of electricity generation and has been used on a utility scale for only a few decades. Wind turbines -- the machines that generate wind power -- are extremely complex, and if any part fails, they have to be shut down until repairs can be performed, losing time and money. Wind turbine service technicians help prevent and solve issues by inspecting turbines and providing regular maintenance. They're capable of diagnosing and fixing any problem that could require the turbine to be shut down.

· *How to become one: *Since the field is still so new, there isn't formal training to become a wind tech. Instead, most come from technician jobs in other industries. Experience or training as an electrician also is beneficial.
· *Pay: *The BLS notes that while no national wage information is currently available, industry sources say starting wages are between $35,000 and $40,000.

If you’re looking for a green job in Hillsborough, *check out our jobs page.*

America's Cup Sailor Dies After Boat Capsizes Patch Burlingame, CA --

*By Bay City News Service*

A sailor who died after a catamaran associated with the America's Cup race capsized in the Bay Thursday afternoon has been identified as Andrew Simpson, a 36-year-old British two-time Olympic gold medalist in sailing.

The incident was reported just after 1 p.m. in the waters north of Treasure Island, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The vessel was the Artemis Racing AC-72, a 72-foot catamaran that belongs to the Swedish team participating in the America's Cup, according to the team's website.

The Artemis Racing team is based in Alameda as they practice for the competition.

After the boat capsized, Simpson could not be located and was submerged in the water for 10 minutes, San Francisco fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said. When he was found and pulled from the Bay, he had no pulse and was not breathing.

A San Francisco Police Department boat was the first at the scene and an officer helped initiate CPR on Simpson, San Francisco police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said. Simpson was taken to the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, where life-saving efforts continued for 20 minutes, Hayes-White said. He could not be revived and was pronounced dead at 1:43 p.m.

Another team member was also taken to the yacht club, where he was treated for a minor cut. All others on the boat were accounted for and returned to racing headquarters in Alameda, Hayes-White said.

The boat was towed to Treasure Island and is in the custody of the U.S. Coast Guard, Esparza said. Authorities are still investigating what caused the vessel to capsize.

Hayes-White said it was "very windy" on the Bay with winds of between 15 and 20 knots. However, she said, "I wouldn't consider these extreme conditions."

On the America's Cup website, Artemis Racing CEO Paul Cayard wrote, "The entire Artemis Racing team is devastated by what happened. Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew's wife and family."

The activity on the water this afternoon was visible to some on shore. Denise Srivastava, who lives on Marina Boulevard, said she saw a rescue boat speed away from the marina around 1 p.m. "I've never seen a rescue boat go out that fast," Srivastava said. "I knew it had to be something bad."

Doug Iles also lives in the Marina District and owns a sailboat. He said "it was not a surprise" that another America's Cup vessel capsized.

A 72-foot catamaran belonging to Oracle Team USA capsized in the Bay in October and required extensive repairs. No one was injured in that incident.

"The boats are very touchy," Iles said. "It's just a sad event."

All calls are confidential.  Reported by Patch 3 days ago.
